THE OGUM GROUP OF CAPOEIRA ANGOLA FOUNDED BY MESTRE CARCARA', STUDENT OF MESTRE GATO PRETO.

Mestre Carcara' (Edmilson Cruz Lemos) - OGUM Italy

Edmilson Lemos (Mestre Carcarà) was born in Salvador – Bahia (Brasil) in 1954. He was initiated into the practice of capoeira, at a very young age, by Mestre João Pequeno de Pastinha. He continued his capoeira studies with Mestre Gato Preto, José Gabriel Goes, Berimbau de Ouro da Bahia, until reaching the rank of Mestre (master). He follows Afro-Brasilian dance and culture courses at S.E.S.C. with Mestre King (Raimundo Bispo do Santo) and other famous professors. At the same time, he is committed to Afro-Brasilian religious traditions, reaching the point of holding an important religious position (ogã) in Dona Detinha's candomblé.

From here, to a large extent, his musical initiation originates. At the end of the 1980s, he moved to Europe, where he lived for thirteen years, spreading Afro-Brasilian culture through Balé Tropical and other groups of equal international fame. Missinho - this is the name by which he is known in the musical environment - returned to Brazil in 1990 bringing a rich wealth of experiences. Between 1992 and 1998 she dedicated herself almost exclusively to music, founding the female percussive group called "Kallundu" - O Som das Meninas do Pelô - also called Kallundettes, which, through a mixture of rhythms, managed to popularize Afro music by fusing the sounds driving drums with the exuberant femininity of Brasilian women. In November 2000 Mestre Carcarà arrived in Italy and settled in Naples, where he founded the Angola capoeira group "OGUM".

The first nucleus of the OGUM group was founded in Naples, in the Arenella district. Mestre Carcara' started to give lessons of Capoeira in a private gym and in a short time the group grew sensibly. From 2000 to 2004 the OGUM group of Capoeira extended over the borders of Naples thanks to the help of the first student formed by Mestre Carcara': Gianni Di Bari (Cogumelo). Thanks to the efforts of Carcara' and Cogumelo the group started nuclei of Capoeira in the cities of Bari, Matera, Campobasso and Ancona.

From 2005, In Naples Mestre Carcara' taught Capoeira in different gyms organising annual workshops and inviting guests high profile Mestres of Capoeira working in Italy and Europe. In 2007 he formed his second student, Andrea Mazzeo (Fujão) awarding him with the title of Treinel and Cogumelo with the title of Instructor. Mestre Carcara' and Treinel Fujao worked extensively in Naples to the promulgation of Capoeira through lessons, workshops and exhibitions.

In 2008 Mestre Carcara' started a samba reggae band called "Batuque de OGUM". The band, small in number (only 7 musicians) has participated in around hundred of gigs in the whole south of Italy playing the traditional percussion rhythms of the Nord Est of Brasil: Samba, Samba-Reggae, Maracatu', Funk, Baiao, Ijexa' and Afoxe'.

In 2010 the Group of Capoeira OGUM became officially a "Cultural and Ethnic Association" starting to collaborate with non-profit organisations and schools operating in the city of Naples to use Capoeira Angola as an educational tool.  Several workshops and courses of Capoeira Angola were organised for kids from at-risk neighbourhoods of the Metropolitan region of Naples. In the same year Mestre Carcara' gave Treinel Fujão the title of Instructor of Capoeira Angola.

The group followed to grow and in 2014 Mestre Carcara' formed his third student Paolo Gambardella (Etiopia) with the title of Treinel of Capoeira. Treinel Etiopia has lived in Barcelona since 2012 and brings ahead the work of Capoeira passed to him by Mestre Carcara'.

Finally, in 2018 Mestre Carcara' formed its fourth and final student Francesco Costabile (Saltadinho) with the title of Treinel of Capoeira. Treinel Saltadinho currently works side by side with Mestre Carcara' in the activities of Capoeira in Naples.

The COVID pandemic has unfortunately blocked all the activity of Capoeira Angola OGUM in Naples However, in 2023 a brand new course started in Naples under the direction of Mestre Carcara' that still makes all the necessary efforts to introduce this wonderful art to new enthusiasts.

Instrutor fujao (andrea Mazzeo) - OGUM UK

Andrea Mazzeo (capoeira name Fujão), was born in Naples in 1985. He started capoeira in 2000 with Mestre Carcara' in Naples and trained with him continuously up to 2017. In this period Fujão had the opportunity to study the base of the Capoeira Angola of Mestre Carcara' and the fundamental principles of the Capoeira of Mestre Gato Preto. Fujão learnt to play all the instruments of capoeira and started to help Mestre Carcara' in teaching capoeira and in 2007 was awarded the title of Treinel (trainer) of Capoeira Angola. The ceremony in which the title was given (roda de formadura) was held in Naples during the annual Capoeira event of the OGUM group.

Thanks to his parallel experience as a scout leader and educator in the Italian Scout association CNGEI, in 2007 Fujão started to participate in different projects funded by no-profit organisations operating in the city of Naples to use Capoeira Angola as an educational and pedagogical tool for kids living in at-risk neighbourhoods of the Metropolitan region of Naples. The project called "Academia de rua" (Street Academy) was a success and it was applied in three different schools in Torre del Greco (on the outskirts of Naples) and two districts of Naples: Sanita' and Via Foria.

In 2010 Fujão was awarded the title of Instrutor (Instructor) of Capoeira Angola and in 2012 funded a parallel group of capoeira in the city of Caserta, 25 km from Naples. In Caserta, Fujão organised the first combined workshop of Afro-Brasilian arts (Capoeira Angola, Batucada and Danca dos Orixas) of Italy.

In 2015, after completing a bachelor's and master's degrees in Chemical Sciences at the University of Naples "Federico II" and after finishing his PhD in Environmental Sciences Fujão decided to leave Italy and move to Chile to work as a Research Fellow in Atmospheric Chemistry. Since he left, he decided to stop teaching Capoeira and focus only on training and joining other groups to share experiences and learn more. In Santiago, Chile he trained in the Ngolo' Ia Muanda group led by Treinel Felipe Perez under the supervision of Contra Mestre Marcelo Finco. In 2018 he moved to Birmingham, UK to work at the University of Birmingham. Here after the COVID pandemic period in 2022, he trained with the local group Cordao De Ouro directed by Contra Mestres Mascote and Joyce.

Finally, in 2023 Fujão moved to Lancaster due to his new work at the Lancaster Environment Centre. Due to the lack of any capoeira group in this area, he decided to open a group of Capoeira Angola in the north-west of England.
